The August 15th meeting of the Hampden Garden Club was called to order at approximately 7:05 PM. A motion was made to accept the May 18th minutes and treasurer's report, which was seconded and approved. Itwaspointedoutthatthiswasthelasttimetheminutesandtreasurer'sreportswere recorded. There was not an update to the treasurer's report this evening, which would include the plant sale proceeds, since the treasurer was not present this evening. A round of applause was given for our new member Marcia Long and she was welcomed to the club. The corresponding secretary mentioned that the club received a thank you note from the Scantic River Artisans for the centerpieces that were previously made by club members at one of their shows.
President Fedora announced that since we do not have a quorum tonight and that a 2/3 vote by the members was needed to approve the new bylaws, and that discussion would be postponed until the September meeting.
It was announced that Dave Buell and Kim Converse will be on the program committee for next year. If anyofthegardenclubmembershaveanysuggestionsforspeakerstoletthemknow. Doesanyoneelse want to be on this committee since more members are needed? This evening, Karen Thibeault and Peggy Ross said they would like to join the program committee. By January or February, the upcoming programs for 2025 need to be finalized for the March booklet. It was also mentioned that the nominating committee needs to call the officers and committee members to see if they are still interested in serving next year. The club needs 3 to 5 members to be on this committee and that if we do not have a response to serve on this committee. President Fedora will appoint members from the floor.
The Scantic River Artisans will have another show September 13 & 14 at the Thornton Burgess School. Six centerpieces need to be made by the club which should only take about an hour. They should be made by Thursday, September 12th. There were several volunteers present tonight that said they would help make them.
The next meeting will be on Sept 19°’, "Growing your Own Mushrooms". Peggy Ross brought up that the clubmightwanttolookintodonatingascholarship. Itwasthoughtthattheclubmightbeabletoaward ascholarshipifwecangetanindividualwhoisinterestedtohelpdigfortheplantsale. Presenttonight, the club had three volunteers to be on a scholarship committee which are Peggy Ross, Sue Austin and Lil Fedora. Motion was made to adjourn at 7:30 PM which was seconded and approved.
The meeting was subsequently reopened. Connie Witt pointed out that we did not need a 2/3 vote by the entire membership to discuss the proposed new bylaws. Discussion ensued on some changes that mightbemadetotheproposednewbylaws. Itwasdecidedbythemembershippresentthatanyformal vote for any changes discussed tonight be delayed until the next meeting when, hopefully, more members are present. A motion was made to do this which was seconded and approved.
An ice cream social provided tonight by Lil Fedora was greatly appreciated by those members present. Motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting at 8:00 PM.
